Kate is drifting from town to town on the east coast of Australia, working at cafes. She forms a friendship with Brett, bonding over a love of nature. He claims to work online in IT, moving from place to place for birdwatching.

A birding trip to remote Hangnail House might allow them to deepen their relationship. Kate is happy to be spending time together, but Brett is anxious to spot the hangnail, a bird so rare that no images exist of it online.

Kate and Brett are about to discover that some things are best left unseen.
